WARNING! TOP CHEF MASTERS SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT!

This post contains Top Chef Masters 2012 spoilers from tonight’s episode. Stop reading if you don’t want to know what happened!

*********************************************************

Throughout the season, we’ve really gotten to know the cheftestants on Top Chef Masters season 4. Great talent has been culled by the sharp knife of competition, and it’s all come down to two culinary giants: Chris Cosentino and Kerry Heffernan. Both have been consistently strong.

I would cast my apron in with that of Chris Cosentino. He’s delivered a bit more of a punch than his competitor Kerry on Top Chef Masters 2012. Here’s to hoping he can continue the fight as they battle it out in this, the Royal Rumble of the Top Chef season 4 kitchen!

The final elimination challenge is an interesting one. The chefs are tasked with something a little different: putting their souls on a plate. In addition to creating dishes that taste great and are perfectly executed, each chef must present four courses in the form of letters. The first course will be a love letter, the second an apology, the third a thank you note, and the final course a letter to themselves.

Chris and Kerry got a nice surprise that will be a big advantage: they get to cook with chefs that they have worked with previously. Familiarity with one another in the kitchen will set the chefs at ease and allow them to focus on their meals.

I really think that Chris has the advantage here. If you saw the mentoring episode, you’ll remember how inept Kerry is with showing passion and emotion. Chris has both, in spades, as was evidenced when he spoke so lovingly about his wife. Awww. *wipes away a tear*

The “awww” moment has been replaced by a gag moment, as I watched Chris make a blood sausage, and prepare his beef heart tartar and tripe. Yes… he is serving offal and blood for his final elimination meal. I know that he’s an amazing chef, but I’m extremely skeptical at this point.

Hottie host Curtis Stone reminded us all that he’s a chef in his own right, inviting Chris and Kerry to the top floor of the Cosmopolitan and preparing a dish in honor of each of them. He can cook, he’s easy on the eyes, he has that amazing Australian accent… /sigh.

The chefs served to a table full of critics… literally. A dozen critics sat the table, along with Curtis Stone. They preferred Kerry’s Korean shrimp stew dish over Chris’s beef heart tartar with fois gras and puffed beef tendon.

The apology course was a mixed bag. Some of the critics loved Kerry’s pea flan, while others were quite taken with Chris’s scallop, pork, and uni dish. One of the critics said that Chris’s dish was the “make up sex”. Rawr.

The third course – the thank you letter – was clearly leaning toward Chris’s tripe dish, despite the large smear on the plate that closely resembled poop. Kerry’s clam dish was met with approval as well.

The last course wasn’t such a hit for everyone: one of the critics said that her short rib (Kerry’s dish) was extremely dry. Another critic said that Chris’s blood sausage was “embarrassingly bad”. Judge Francis Lam disagreed, saying that it was the best thing he’s eaten in the past 30 years.

This is clearly going to come down to cerebral cooking versus classical execution. Kerry presented a meal that was wonderfully executed. Chris presented himself on a plate: guts for glory.

Those guts – literally and figuratively – paid off. Chris Cosentino takes the title of Top Chef Master, winning $100,000 for the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Research Organization. Well done, Chris! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with the world.
